Maj. Gen. WRE Murphy ~
Rory Gallagher
|
John P. McMahon is originally
from Ardee County
Louth, Ireland. It is 45 miles north of Dublin. I now live in Massachusetts.
Ardee offers old Norman Castles, the Jumping Church and
Ardee Bog, ("Turfman from Ardee" song) and
Deeside Doings the premier Irish newspaper!
The Irish version of my name
- Seán Mac Mathuna - means John, son of the bear. There are two main sects of
the family in County Monaghan & County Clare.
Ours came from the Kingodom or Oriel - Co.Monaghan. Patrick Kavanagh country.
I went to elementay school at
Drakestown National School in Ballapousta, County
Louth. My grandfather, Maj. General WRE Murphy
lived with us from 1958 on He was a quiet inspiration. He was
born in Wexford in January 1890 . Like many other proud Irishmen he joined the
South Staffordshire Regiment in the war effort on the promise that the British
Government would look more favorably on Irish Independence, if the Irish helped
fight the Germans. He fought in WW1, and returned to an Ireland that was in
turmoil. He was the first Irish Commisioner of the Dublin Metropolitan Police. He was Deputy Commissioner of the Garda Siochana
until his retirement in 1955.
He still wept over lost friends on
both sides of the divide from the Civil War days. He taught French to any
interested kids in Ardee.
I spent a year at an all Irish school -
Scoil na
Leanai, An Rinn, Co. Portlairge. Secondary level schooling was at Franciscan
College - Gormanston College from
1968 to 1973. Then on to
University College Dublin for my BCL - Bachelor of Civil Law and my MBA in
Massachusetts. I left Ireland in 1978. Unemployment was 19% and the future was
very bleak.
Find some history of Ireland, Brian Boru, relative Ada
English,
WRE Murphy.
Hobbies include
movies, bicycling, ski-ing, short-wave radio, music, jazzm classical, blues, especially
Rory Gallagher. Rory was unique
and held our hearts and souls in his
